When One Tumblr Blog is Not Enough – Why You Should Create a Second Blog on Tumblr

If you are fairly new to tumblr, you may ask why you need to create

another Tumblr blog. Well, you are not alone. I did a small survey on my current followers and almost 69% of the people who responded only use one Tumblr account.

However, there are advantages of having a secondary Tumblr account.

In this article, I’ll outline the benefits of having a secondary blog and explain advantages it has that the primary blog doesn’t (yes, it has advantages).

This will help you decide which type of blog to choose and for what purpose.

Why create a second Tumblr Blog?

1. Password-Protect A Tumblr Blog

One reason you might want to have a second Tumblr blog is to have a password-protected blog. Currently, if you want to protect your tumblr blog with a password and make it private, you would need to make a secondary blog. You cannot password-protect a primary blog.

2. Manage a group blog

I manage a group blog for one of my tumblr blogs where I have other members post things for me using their own account. Similar to password-protected blogs, you would also need to create a second tumblr blog to make a group blog.

3. Blog with an Entirely New Topic

At some point you may one to create a tumblr blog dedicated to a certain topic–separate from your personal tumblr blog. Creating a second account dedicated to that topic makes your blog more focused and organized.

4. Build Links to your Website

I also use Tumblr to create backlinks to my websites. I sign up for a Tumblr account for all website domain that I have whether it is active or not. This way, I am can to post things to a Tumblr account with the exact name as my website.

Of course, with all these benefits come some downsides. For one, you can only follow or like other tumblogs using your primary account. As a result you only see one dashboard and separating the contents of the two accounts becomes difficult.

How to Add a Second Blog on Tumblr:

Step 1: Go to Create New Blog Page (Make sure you are already signed in)

Step 2: Fill in the Title and URL section

Step 3: Choose if you want to make this blog private or not. You can always change this later
Step 4: Click “Create Blog”

Note: You cannot turn a primary tumblr blot into an extra secondary blog.

How to Delete an Additional Blog on Tumblr:

Step 1: From your Dashboard at the top, select the blog that you want to delete.
Step 2: Click “Blog Settings” on the right side.
Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the “Delete this blog” link.
